Maiori walking and trekking Holidays 2017
Maiori, on Italy's Amalfi Coast, is the perfect base for all those whishing to combine the relax on a sunny beach and the exploration of the ancient pathways, that trough lemon, olives, chestnut groves, vineyards, and woods reach tranquil hamlets and breathtaking points of view, from where to admire the entire Amalfi Coast and the Gulf of Salerno. At the time of the Grand Tour, it was trough one of this path (From the Abbey of Cava dei Tirreni, to the Santuario dell'Avvocata and then down to the shore), that Henry Swinburne arrived in Maiori. (...In the afternoon I walked down to Majuri, a town containing five thousands inhabitants, situated on the shore at the mouth of a deep valley...The higher parts of the mountains that inclose this valley abound in evergreen oaks of a diminutive size, coppice-wood cloaths the sides; vines, and hanging garden of orange-tree fill up the lower region.)
Ferdinand Gregorovius, another traveller of the Grand Tour reached Maiori from Cetara :
(..The beach near Minori and Maiori is the most beautiful that we have found along the shores of the Gulf of Salerno, Amalfi and Sorrento, and, risking in being accused of heresy, I would say that their position is far more beautiful than that of Sorrento. In no other place I found a location of such a grace. First we arrived in Maiori, founded in the ninth century by Sicardo of Salerno. The marina consists of a narrow beach with very fine and white sand. At the top, hanging from the terraced mountains there are gardens with attractive lovely white houses, each of which seems to be a villa. On a hill above the town there is an old castle. The quiet and tranquil paths and trails are lost in the mountain, from which comes a bubbling waterfall. The spirit is gripped by this enchanted solitude and every traveller would dream of living here, or at least spend here a summer. And the Nordic in particular feels intensely this "figiakasta". We were sitting in a lovely osteria, decorated with paintings, close to the sea, in the company of glasses of wine and a beautiful plate of dark figs dark and golden oranges. The warm air, the breath of the sea and the perfume of the flowers made us somnolent.
